Editorial Comment: Mr. Jacobs makes some good points in his article about selling photos online. In particular, he suggests that you upload thousands of photos to numerous sites. Sounds like a tedious job. In fact, the good photographers do not adhere to that technique. They upload quality rather than quantity. Perhaps starting by uploading photos with the “shotgun” method will help you to know which of your images will be successful, then you can go for quality.

If you need some help with quality, take a look at Digital Photography Success by Amy Renfrey. It is a value packed resource for any photographer.

How to Sell Photos Online For Profit – Find Out How to Make Money With Your Digital Camera!

By John S. Jacobs

Have you ever thought about turning your photography hobby into a business? Digital photographers are making good profit from stock photography sites and many of them receive hundreds or even thousands of dollars by selling photos to various media publications.

Stock photography is the supply of digital photos which can be licensed for use. There are many businesses that use stock photography websites to locate photographs including magazines, advertising agencies, web designers, and graphic artists. This saves them the fees they would have to pay for a professional photographer.

So, you just need to take a few photos and upload them to a stock photos website. This way, every time someone buys one of your photographs, you can get a commission of about 50% – 80%, depending on the site.

Most of the time, you can get between $1 and $10 for every photo you sell. Usually, the price these photos are sold for varies between $1 and $10, but if the photograph is of high quality and is unique, the price can drastically increase. Of course, earning $3- $4 per photo may not seem that much, but think about how much you can earn if you sell a lot of photographs every month! It would be actually possible to earn a full time income online.

So, here are a few tips you need to follow if you want to start selling your photographs online for profit:

Register with as many websites as possible, in order to get maximum exposure for your pictures.

Always submit your photo to the right category, because if you choose the wrong category it will either be rejected or go unnoticed.

Make sure that you have all the rights for the photos you are going to sell to avoid copyright infringement issues.

Choose the right subject: very few people would be interested in buying a photograph of your sister. It’s important to choose generic objects or travel destinations, which have a larger audience. Doing a little research by visiting a stock photography site can help you decide on the subject.

A good camera can make the difference between success and failure: choose a camera with at least a 4 mega pixel sensor. Don’t worry about the cost; this will be the only investment that you will have to make. Besides, the camera will pay for itself in the long run.

Take a lot of photographs: you will need at least a thousand good photographs to start making a good profit. But, you don’t need to worry about the number, because if you really love photography you will greatly enjoy the whole process.

If you find yourself reading this article, chances are that you are looking for some ideas for photo projects. Naturally, it would be good to pick a photography project that helps you grow your photography skills. In this article, one such skill, negative space, will be discussed.

This is a compositional technique that can be used to produce eye-catching photos. When properly used, it can help improve your images. Therefore, let’s take a look at the technique?

Composition

There are three principal compositional components to a photography image.

Frame: The frame is the border that is all around the rest of the image.

Positive Space: The subject of the image. This is generally the item on which the camera is focused.

Negative Space The rest of the image. It is located between the positive space and the frame.

When many people go about composing an image, they concentrate their attention on the positive space. The negative space, gets very little thought. If it receives any consideration at all, it is more of an afterthought. This kind of approach can result in second-rate images. When correctly utilized, the negative space can serve two very important functions:

First: It can help in defining what the positive space is all about. Basically, it helps to tell the story of the positive space.

Second: It can improve the positive space. Essentially, the negative space helps to make the positive space more noticeable.

The negative space can serve to help define the positive space by furnishing additional detail. As one example, a photograph may show part of a bridge. However, there may be few details that offer any suggestions of where the bridge is based. Is it in a crowded, urban park or in a forest? We can not tell from the close-up. If the photographer were to show some of the landscape, this would create some negative space that would certainly help to much better define the positive space. As a result, the image would be improved.

While utilizing a negative space can really strengthen an image, there is one thing that must be avoided. The negative space should never be allowed to overwhelm the positive space as this would serve to deteriorate the image.

Making the positive space stick out is the other way that the negative space helps to enhance images. This is accomplished due to the fact the negative space helps to control the attention of a viewer. It does this by helping to lead the viewer’s attention to the positive space. When utilized in this fashion, the negative space is often relatively devoid of detail (this gets rid of any unproductive detail).

In short, both spaces need to be taken into consideration when figuring out how to best compose an image. Basically, both spaces are of equal importance and should be treated as such. This will help improve the quality of the images that you capture.

Your Photography Project

So, are you geared up to start a photography project? For this project, you should concentrate on capturing images where both spaces have been very carefully thought out. The goal is to carefully think about both spaces before the image is captured. This will require that you previsualize the image. That is, you must imagine what the image will look like before you capture the shot.

For this project, try capturing images of various types of subject matter. For instance, you could take shots in your garden, the city, a local park, and a national park.

Synopsis

This writing discussed one skill that can be used to launch a photography project. However, there are many more ideas that can help you improve your photography. Are you ready to check out some more photography ideas?

If you are looking for ways to improve your photography, why not start by upgrading your “hardware”?

Just dropping in to your local Best Buy or Target and picking up the cheapest camera on display will not get you where you want to be with respect to a higher level of photography. Take some time to find out which cameras are the best for your buck.

One such camera on the market right now is the Canon Powershot S90.

While digital SLR cameras are receiving plenty of interest because of their recent drop in prices and increased feature packages, there is still a demand for high end “point and shoot” cameras.

Say hello to the Canon Powershot S90, a completely point and shoot camera with virtually all the control of a digital slr camera. It is an alternative to several prosumer models that have a tendency to look more like professional models in line and design. This exceptional camera was created to be the total pocket or purse model.

The Canon Powershot S90 delivers the goods in low light settings!

This little gem has some serious benefits for two groups of people.

To begin with, there is the advancing enthusiastic amateur who is nearly ready for the Digital SLR. She wishes to experience camera features that are not available on less highly developed models in order to produce an understanding of what these controls are able to do and the way the work.

Next is the digital slr owner, either an advanced amateur or a professional, who is looking for a fantastic pocket model. These are individuals who never want to neglect a photographic experience of any kind, no matter if their digital slr camera is not conveniently available.

The Canon Powershot S90 has the look and feel of a truly compact camera, the kind that most folks carry around in their pocket or purse. And, although it looks like a typical digital compact, it is anything but.
Let’s have a look at the standard features of the Canon Powershot S90:

*	New 10-megapixel High Sensitivity System; DIGIC 4 Image Processor

*	Improved low-light image performance, plus a Low Light scene mode for ISO settings up to 12,800

*	Customizable control ring for easy access and operation of manual or other creative shooting settings

*	Wide-angle 3.8x optical zoom with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer; bright f/2.0 lens

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Here is the ‚”goods” that really sets this little camera apart from the other compacts.

1.	Extensive photographic feature set – more professional than typical point and shoot cameras

2.	New Function Ring for easy access of the advanced manual controls

3.	Usable, fast RAW mode with excellent software supplied (RAW, an alternative to JPEG, is the choice of all advanced photographers)

4.	Highly customizable – normal digital cameras have single creative selections, but the S90 is customizable in the same sense as high end DSLR cameras.

Need more to convince you? Here is a typical quote from one of the many satisfied Canon Powershot S90 owners: “You get what you pay for and if you want the best pocket size camera on the market, look no further than the S90.”

The Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD is available now at Amazon – great camera for taking great photos.

Photography Filters have two different meanings depending on how long you have had photography as a hobby. Most of us today think as filters as an option with Photoshop. This is not the case. Before the invention of computers and things like Photoshop we had small glass discs to create the filtered affect. There are many options with filters you can blur a picture, sharpen the picture, and even block out the UV rays. Filters are often used to correct a problem or make a picture look a little different – by bali photographer.

Lets talk about filters that blur a photograph. When you are taking a picture of a waterfall at the bottom where the water rises in a fogginess you can add a filter to create the cloud in the picture. Cameras donít always see what the eye sees. In some cases it can have a high resolution to depict the actual water drops rather than the cloud, so adding a filter to your lens can help create the effect your eye sees.

Other filters such as the UV protector guard against the harsh rays. Along with the UV filter you should have a polarizer. The polarizer is used in photography when you are taking a shot into direct sunlight or other light. It will help balance out the photograph so that you donít get the washed out look. Other filters can give you the washed out effect if you feel your photography would speak more. The filters in Photoshop are not as wide as the filters you can actually buy for your camera, but they can have some of the same effects that you are afterwards.

Have you ever wanted to create a star effect when taking pictures of light filtering through the trees? You can create a star effect with any photograph by using a star effect filter. This filter allows light to pass through a series of thin lines etched into the filter letting the light streak outward in a star shape.

Some filters actually help you create a depth of field or focal point. The fog/ mist filter is one of these. The fog/ mist filter allows for a glow or flare of light in the photograph. Photography is filled with much skill and equipment. Having filters to help create the perfect professional photograph will enhance your fun with your hobby. Lets look at a few more filters.

There are color correcting lenses. If the sky is too blue for the photograph you can choose a filter that will tamp down the blue to a less bright state. If you are into underwater photography you might have filters that allow for the underwater colors. The color spectrum does not have a great range under water. A lot of things will look red even though they are not. It is easy to bring about the original color of underwater life when you use special filters for color correction.

The use of filters in photography not only allows you to have special effects in a photograph to create something new and different, but it can help enhance the shot by adding color or dampening the natural effects of light. Photography has many types of equipment that require skill and knowledge making it a wonderful hobby or profession. If you need a hobby, photography allows you to be creative.

The diversity of careers in photography is truly amazing. From the base talent in photography and a solid understanding of new and emerging technologies, the sky is the limit for a talented photographer with a solid education under his or her belt. That is because photography is both an art form and a solid technical skill. So the same school might produce an award-winning artist, a successful wedding photographer, a fashion bali photographer, a police investigator taking pictures of crime scenes, or a crack newspaper photographer.

So the question emerges as to what kind of photography school to pick for yourself or the student in your family that wants the best education possible. How you pick any school is very much influenced by both how you approach education in general and what your objectives are.

Some would advocate that you look to get into the finest artistic photography schools in the country. If you wish to go down that path, then for sure the Brooks Institute of photography or one of the elite east coast schools of artistic photography is a noble ambition. But there are three drawbacks to trying to attend such schools. First is, of course, the potential cost. Any elite school is going to charge elite prices. And if you are like most of us, you want to get the most education for your money. So doing some caparison shopping for a school is in order.

The second drawback is getting admitted. Most of the top-flight schools have waiting lists and tough entry requirements that may make that ambition more demanding than is necessary. But the most meaningful drawback is that these schools may not be the right choice for the career you or the photography student in your life may wish to pursue. So a good general set of guidelines on how to evaluate a wide variety of photography schools is in order. The guidelines might includeÖ

What kind of photography is right for the student?
A program geared toward artistic photography that will result in pieces hanging in a modern art museum will have a very different approach than a program to train forensic photographers. Your student may not know right away what field they want to go into. If so, getting started at a generic school such as a photography emphasis at the local junior college may be the right choice until the career path becomes clearer.

Is it a legitimate school?
You want to avoid schools that are run from the internet or that you read about on the back of a matchbook. A legitimate school will produce a recognized degree that will be well respected in the industry and will help the student get jobs.

What is available locally?
Why go out of town or out of state if you have good local schools? Many state universities, junior colleges and local tech schools have find programs.

How diverse and up to date is the program?
Will your student get exposed to the newest of technology in the field of photography? Will they get trained in how to service many different types of photography assignments?

How does the programís job placement rating look?
What percentage of graduates from this program get jobs? How well respected is this school by businesses who employ photographers?

These are solid evaluation criteria. And if you apply these standards to a couple dozen of the finest schools both locally and nationally, before long a short list of good schools will emerge. From there, some site visits and interviews with teachers and graduates will narrow things down. And you will be glad you ìdid your homeworkî to find the kind of photography school that will take you or the student in your life to the next level of success in their love of photography.

One of the best ways to make money from freelance photography is to turn your photos into products that people will love to buy. The possibilities are numerous- from canvas prints to photography books to customizing photo t-shirts and other types of clothing. But there are some unusual photo products too. In this article I discuss five photo products that you might not normally expect to be able to customize with your photos.

Bean Bags

You can have bean bags custom-made with a montage of your photos. They are great for relaxing on, offer plenty of support, and they’re designed from your very own pictures. Your visitors will love checking out all your photographs while sitting on one of these! And your customers will love a beanbag designed around photos of their favorite location or interest.

Candles

How would you like to design your own candles with your photo on the side? And don’t worry about losing half your photograph when the candle burns down… technology has given us special “everlasting” candles that can be re-used again and again and still look good.

Car Seat Covers

Photo seat back covers not only decorate your vehicle seats with good designs, they make them softer at the same time! Here is a customized photo product that you can take with you wherever you go! You can customize baby seat covers with your photographs too. Perhaps you can sell some of these through your local automotive accessories store.

Mouse Wrist Pads

I think everyone must have seen photo mouse pads but how about a photo mouse wrist pad? These super comfortable ergonomic wrist pads support your wrist and assist to alleviate RSI. These are one of my favorite kinds of photo product because not only are they very attractive once your photo is added, but this is something that people really need!

Money Boxes

With personalized photo money boxes your friends can save money and memories at the same time. Or you can sell money boxes decorated with your images through your local book stores or toy stores.

These are only a few of the photo products you can customize with your photos. There are many more and we have identified hundreds of photo products you can easily design and order through reputable suppliers here.

Have you ever just stared at that beautiful piece of technology you use to take pictures (you know, your digital camera) and asked yourself, “I wonder if I can make money with my photography?”

Of course you have. We all have.

Maybe you don’t even want to make that much, just enough to take a vacation or buy your next lens (we all have that “next lens” sickness… er.. desire), but you don’t even know where to start looking for a market for your photography.

There are actually several avenues or categories to explore for selling photography. And inside those there are quite a few possibilities. And of course, there are many photography enthusiasts who really do make a living selling their photos, either at festivals, galleries, or online.

Let’s take a look at some ways of selling your photography online.

Shooting for stock

Are you that photographer that always has a camera in hand, no matter what time of day or where you are? Then stock photography may be a good fit for you. Artists and graphic designers are all over the place creating pamphlets, brochures for travel agencies, menus for local restaurants, and just about any other thing you can think of to advertise. You never know when a graphic designer will need a photo of a shopper holding a beautiful piece of fruit.

Stock Photo??

They will not be looking for you to get their images. Almost 100% of these creators use stock agencies to supply their photography needs. And YOU could be the ultimate supplier for those image needs by uploading your photographs to the stock agency.
There are two categories of stock agency – stock and microstock.

As a beginner, you will have more of a chance to have your photos accepted by a microstock agency. With microstock agencies, there is a rather small fee for those who are using the images, which also depends on the size of the image that is downloaded. The return to you, the photographer, could be about $.30 for a small image. I know, that’s not much. But consider the alternative. That image is probably sitting on your hard drive doing nothing, right? The up side is that if you happen to hit on a keyword that is highly sought after, you could potentially have dozens or hundreds of downloads of your image.

It is a good idea to find the place on the microstock photography website that lists “under-represented” images. That is those images that are in need or short supply. If you upload lots of images that are in high demand, but in short supply, your chances for downloads increase accordingly.

Stock agencies, as opposed to microstock agencies, are much more discerning, with more stringent requirements. They accept only top-quality images from top professionals. It is not impossible to get your foot in the door of a stock agency, but it is more difficult than getting in with a microstock agency. Payout is not that much better either, especially if you happen to get noticed with a very popular photograph.

The three most well known stock photography websites are

 .

What about Creating your own website.

Getting People to your own web site will take some work.

If the thought of getting only a small percentage of the sale at a stock agency does not sit well with you, maybe you should consider putting up your own photography website. If you own a copy of Photoshop CS4 or Adobe Lightroom, you have a built-in tool for creating an entire photography website.

The problem then becomes how do you get folks to view your web site? This is a whole new problem and it takes a long time to get noticed on the Internet, simply because there are so many photography web sites out there. Probably the best way to get traffic to your own photography site is to start visiting blogs and forums related to the type of photography you do. But visiting is not enough. You must make your presence known by leaving valuable comments with your web site URL in your signature line. Each time you do this, you will be leaving a link back to your site (called “backlinks” in the Internet world). The more valuable your comments are, the more people will click on your link. It does take time, but this is a proven method for getting traffic to your web site. Of course, if your photography is good, these folks will tell their friends about you. This is true of Moose Peterson – see, I just gave him a backlink by adding the URL of his web site to his name.

Another way to get traffic also involves getting links, but this one is by using Web 2.0 methods. Basically it is by using social bookmarking at places like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social web sites.

The process of getting traffic can be quite tedious, but it can pay dividends in the long run.

Join Photography web sites.

There are lots of web sites that have a membership for photographers. Most charge a small fee, which makes sense because they have to pay for having a large bandwidth to their web site due to lots of visitors and many images. This can pay off for you, too, especially if you are an active member, commenting on others’ photography and adding comments to help with techniques for improving photographs. Two such web sites are Digital Image Cafe and BetterPhoto, but there are many more to choose from.

Use a service to promote your photography

There are places that will allow you to put links to your images and actually sell them for you. This is really cool because you get two major benefits. First, you get lots of exposure (not the photographic kind) for your work. These sites already have an established presence on the Internet with plenty of visitors. The second benefit is that they will handle the sales transaction for you. This is huge if you don’t want to have to handle the technology to set up a payment vehicle on your own web site. The fee is not too bad either, usually less than 25% of the sale. Now, if that sounds like a lot, just consider how much you are making from photography sales on the Internet right now. If it is $0.00, then you will be way ahead of the game. Two services that offer these sales agreements are FotoMoto and SmugMug.

Of course there are other ways to make money with your digital camera. More suggestions for making money from your photography are available in some of the product links on the right side of this web page.

This is a 10.0-megapixel camera with 15x optical zoom. The Smart Portrait System lets users take portraits without the dreaded red-eye, which the camera fixes automatically. It also has face-finding technology, so faces are always in focus, a Smile Mode, which shoots the picture when the subject smiles, and a Blink Warning, which lets the user know when the subject blinked. Other features include image stabilization, high-speed shooting, low-light shooting, and Sport Continuous Scene Mode of up to 13 frames per second.

Even professional photographers use these compact cameras for situations when they cannot lug around a huge digital SLR camera. So don’t think that using one of these makes you an “amateur.”

Of course, it is a good idea to be familiar with your camera and equipment. Always experiment with the techniques you plan to use before you get to the actual situation where the skills will be necessary.

Here are a few hints about how you can improve your landscape photography success.

Tip 1: Mount Your Camera on a Good Tripod

Tripods are like a good insurance plan. Always bring a tripod if you plan on shooting landscapes. This is especially important if you are shooting in low light, such as early morning, late evening, or in the fog. But even if the day is sunny, you are always assured of a better result with a tripod. The tripod eliminates any camera shake. Tripods come in many styles and weights. Do your research before buying one, making sure the one you choose is good for you camera and your situation. For instance, don’t get a heavy tripod if you are planning to backpack into the wilderness.

Tip 2: Shoot at the Right Time

For most outdoor photography, especially when shooting landscapes, the best time is early or late in the day. The light at dawn and dusk is extraordinary for photographing landscapes. Definitely avoid times between 10:00 and 3:00. During mid-day the lighting is much too bright, tending to cause harsh shadows and bright highlights. The exception to this rule is during stormy situations. Storms tend to develop some very unique lighting and help you to get some very dramatic results.

Tip 3: Choose the right Lens

When shooting landscapes, a wide angle lens is usually indicated. A wide angle lens will cover a lot of area. A wide angle lens would be in the range from 12mm to 24mm, however, you can use other focal lengths to get different creative shots. So, it is a good idea to have a variety of lenses in your gear bag.

Tip 4: Timer or Cable Release

In addition to using a tripod, consider using the on-camera timer. Coupled with a tripod this will give you the optimum chance for a successful landscape photo. When you press the shutter release button, there is always a chance for camera shake, even when using a tripod. Another choice is to carry a cable release. With a cable release, you can trigger the shutter at precisely the right timing. Timing is not always an issue in landscape photography, but a cable release is an excellent tool to have in your camera bag.

Tip 6: Compose your picture

One of the biggest mistakes made by beginning (and even some pro) photographers is to forget about composition rules when taking landscape pictures. Try to avoid putting the main object of the image in the center of the composition. Remember the rule of thirds. Also pay attention to distracting artifacts like people and other movable objects. It is quite depressing when you upload your images to your computer to find that you did not notice something like a wind blown newspaper or a pedestrian entering the picture.

Bottom Line

Landscape photography is a wonderful way to use your digital camera as an artistic tool of expression. Think about these helpful tips the next time you plan an excursion to take landscape photos, and you will be much happier with the results. My recommendation for help in this category is Digital Photography Success.
