The Canon Rebel T3i is a great macro photography instrument. Macro, or close-up, photography is at the top of many “I want to learn how to do this” lists, but, for some reason, it gets pushed to the back burner. Well, there is no time like the present to get started. With your T3i, it is ever so effortless.

You may have a dedicated macro lens – terrific. However, if you don’t have one of those expensive lenses especially made for close-up work, have no fear, you can use extension tubes! With an inexpensive set of extension tubes, you can transform almost any lens into a macro lens. Basically, extension tubes increase the distance from the camera sensor to the lens so you, can move your camera closer to the subject of your picture.

As you will discover, taking extremely close photos reveals details that are not normally noticed. At a casual glance, we would not normally see all the detail in most small objects. That’s what makes shooting macro so special. There are so many moments of photographic amazement.

On a personal note, yours truly actually became hooked on photography when I took my first macro shot with an old point and shoot camera. That’s when I began to take pictures of every bug that would stay in the view finder long enough. And when there was no bug available, I took pictures of flowers. I didn’t realize that there are so many other interesting subjects to shoot in the tiny world of close up photography. Actually, almost any small object is worthy of your attention, including parts of your clothing like buttons and zippers as well as things like eyes and fingers. There really is no limit to what can be photographed.

Now that you are convinced to get started, here are a few hints:

*Start your engine. This seems quite obvious, but lots of us are inclined to get bogged down with the learning process. Yes, there are many classes and tutorials available online and off line, but just go out and take some pictures. You will learn as you go, and it will be so rewarding. Photography is a skill that is best learned “on the job.”

* Don’t worry about mistakes. This goes along with the first hint. Mistakes are an important part of the learning process. They may actually lead to some amazing surprises. Something you messed up can lead to some of your most outstanding images.

*Use a tripod. Close-up photos are prone to give the photographer lots of blur when trying to hand-hold the camera. In addition to the tripod, you can benefit from using the shutter release timer on your T3i, or you can get an inexpensive remote shutter release.

*Use Live View and focus manually. Canon has added a very helpful feature on the Rebel T3i when it comes to macro photography. When in Live View, you can use digital zoom. Digital zoom is used to get a closer view of the subject so you can focus more accurately. At 5 times the magnification (or even 10 times), you can see clearly to focus. This one feature is what sold me on the Canon Rebel T3i.

That’s it. Pretty simple, right? These tips are meant to get you out and shooting.

Aperture Priority And Exposure

One way to take control of your photography output is to move the mode dial off “P” or “Auto”. These settings are fine for beginners or if you are just getting used to a new camera, but there comes a time when your confidence has grown, that you will find the need to have more control.

Aperture Priority (Av or A) allows you to change everything you need in order to have the creative exposures you dream of.

What Is Aperture

Aperture refers to the size of the camera’s lens opening when a picture is taken. The aperture determines how much light gets to the camera’s image sensor to “expose” the subject of the picture.

To get a better understanding of aperture, imagine you are in your bedroom and the only light source is a single window. If the window is very small, only a little light can get into the bedroom. If the window is larger, more light can enter the room.

This young photographer does not yet know about Aperture Priority.

This is the case with the lens opening of your camera. The smaller the aperture, the less light can get to the sensor. The larger the aperture, the more light gets to the sensor.

The key is to make sure just the right amount of light is allowed to enter through the lens opening. If the aperture is too small and not enough light is allowed in, the picture is under-exposed with excessive dark areas. If the aperture is too big and too much light gets in, the picture is over-exposed and washed out.

Aperture is measured in f-stops. These can be a bit confusing because the numbers are exactly opposite of what you might expect. The larger numbers, such as f/22 mean that the aperture is smaller. The smaller numbers, such as f/2.8 mean the aperture is larger.

Using Aperture Priority

When you set your camera on aperture priority, you are controlling only the f-stop of the lens. As you determine the f-stop, the camera will set the correct corresponding shutter speed. So, in truth, you can use Aperture Priority to control the shutter speed as well.

Want to freeze action? Choose a large aperture and the camera will automatically choose a faster shutter speed.

Want a slow shutter speed to blur the motion (as in a waterfall or whitewater creek)? Choose a small aperture and let the camera take care of the shutter speed.

Notice the f-stop on this Canon Rebel T3i is f/9.0

Here are some guidelines for setting aperture according to scene requirements:

Shallow depth of field (for blurred backgrounds) – use a large aperture (small f-stop number).

Deep depth of field – use a small aperture (large f-stop number).

Freezing action – set a large aperture so that you get a fast shutter speed.

Blurring action – set a small aperture so that you get a slow shutter speed.

This method of keeping you camera on Aperture Priority will give you lots of control while allowing you to get the creative photos you desire. You get consistently great results with the least amount of effort or knowledge.

There are lots of different ways to make money with a digital camera.

Do you need to make some extra money, but you don’t have time for a second full-time job?

The solution is as close as the digital camera that is with you 24/7. Since you love using it, you might as well put it to good use.

Make Money with your digital camera - kids sports - from Greg Kuvaydaus Photostream

Let me just tell you, not everyone who makes money with a digital camera is an expert photographer. All it takes is a little knowledge and maybe a little in the way of self assertion. But even if you are an introvert, you can get others to promote your skills.

Most of your friends and family already know how great most of your photos turn out, so you can get them to help get your name out into the community.

Take a look at the suggestions below. These are just a drop in the photography bucket. Use this short list as a starting point to come up with your own ideas.

Fun Ways To Make Money With a Digital Camera

Profitable Photography

How to easily start up your own profitable photography business from home, just like I did – and make $720 in just 3 hours per week part time!

Digital Photography Business

* Kids sports – parents usually take pictures when their kids are playing, but those snapshots are not the quality that would really excite them unless they get a random good shot by accident. What about if you staged the shot of a kid jumping off one of those little trampolines and catching a ball with arm fully extended? Of course, the ball is already strategically placed in the glove to look authentic.

If you set up your props and get a kid to “demonstrate” the action as you shoot, don’t you know that parents will see what is going on and be drawn to your “stage”, wanting their own son or daughter to have their photo taken?

Baseball and softball are not the only sports, but use your imagination about how to set up a great looking action shot in whatever sport is going on at the moment. And there is always a picture day for that sport when parents are taking the normal shots. Just be a bit more creative and you will have loads of folks who are begging you to take their money for one of those shots.

Another idea for presenting the finished photo is to use an online service that will print the photo as some type of magazine cover, such as a sports magazine.

* Pet photos - This is another area where you can use your imagination to set yourself apart from the crowd. Pet owners are even more willing to part with their money when it involves their “baby”.

You will just need a couple of inexpensive props like baskets and blankets, or even fun doggy clothing to get those special shots that pet owners will love.

You can earn extra money if you offer a framing service, too. You can send your digital prints off to a service like MPix. They will be delivered to your customer ready to hang and you had to do nothing except shoot the photo and do a little photoshop post processing.

*Graduations - Think of all the places kids and people graduate from. You don’t have to be tied to the traditional where the pros are gathering (ie High School and College graduations). Kids also graduate from preschool, elementary school, and middle school. Adults graduate from vocational and technical schools.

And you could even contact the local dog training clinic and take pictures of successful dog/owner graduations. You can come up with dozens, if not hundreds of opportunities to capture a significant moments.

*Photo Novelty Items – There is an online service at Zazzle.com where you can send your photos to have them put on clothing, mugs, mouse pads, and almost any other object. Offer your services to family reunions and anniversary parties. Others who might be interested are office groups who are preparing for a special event like a 5K run or a community fund raiser. Tee-shirts are a hot item for these types of events.

*Newborn photo service – This is an awesome opportunity that has been untapped by photographers. Parents of newborns are some of the busiest people in the world. Simply get the word out that you are available “as needed”. That way, you can take informal snapshots for the growing family either before they leave the hospital, or after they get home. Most photos are taken with one parent or the other because one is needed to take the picture. But with your services, both parents and the child can be in more of the pictures all together, and the parents have one less thing to try and figure out.

One last thing to notice is just how little time it will take to do a few photo shoots each week… and how much the folks you would deal with are anxious to get top quality photos in the categories listed here. You love to use that digital camera. Why not use it for fun and profit. Find your own fun ways to make money with a digital camera!

Editorial Comment: Mr. Jacobs makes some good points in his article about selling photos online. In particular, he suggests that you upload thousands of photos to numerous sites. Sounds like a tedious job. In fact, the good photographers do not adhere to that technique. They upload quality rather than quantity. Perhaps starting by uploading photos with the “shotgun” method will help you to know which of your images will be successful, then you can go for quality.

If you need some help with quality, take a look at Digital Photography Success by Amy Renfrey. It is a value packed resource for any photographer.

How to Sell Photos Online For Profit – Find Out How to Make Money With Your Digital Camera!

By John S. Jacobs

Have you ever thought about turning your photography hobby into a business? Digital photographers are making good profit from stock photography sites and many of them receive hundreds or even thousands of dollars by selling photos to various media publications.

Stock photography is the supply of digital photos which can be licensed for use. There are many businesses that use stock photography websites to locate photographs including magazines, advertising agencies, web designers, and graphic artists. This saves them the fees they would have to pay for a professional photographer.

So, you just need to take a few photos and upload them to a stock photos website. This way, every time someone buys one of your photographs, you can get a commission of about 50% – 80%, depending on the site.

Most of the time, you can get between $1 and $10 for every photo you sell. Usually, the price these photos are sold for varies between $1 and $10, but if the photograph is of high quality and is unique, the price can drastically increase. Of course, earning $3- $4 per photo may not seem that much, but think about how much you can earn if you sell a lot of photographs every month! It would be actually possible to earn a full time income online.

So, here are a few tips you need to follow if you want to start selling your photographs online for profit:

Register with as many websites as possible, in order to get maximum exposure for your pictures.

Always submit your photo to the right category, because if you choose the wrong category it will either be rejected or go unnoticed.

Make sure that you have all the rights for the photos you are going to sell to avoid copyright infringement issues.

Choose the right subject: very few people would be interested in buying a photograph of your sister. It’s important to choose generic objects or travel destinations, which have a larger audience. Doing a little research by visiting a stock photography site can help you decide on the subject.

A good camera can make the difference between success and failure: choose a camera with at least a 4 mega pixel sensor. Don’t worry about the cost; this will be the only investment that you will have to make. Besides, the camera will pay for itself in the long run.

Take a lot of photographs: you will need at least a thousand good photographs to start making a good profit. But, you don’t need to worry about the number, because if you really love photography you will greatly enjoy the whole process.

By Ron Bigelow

If you find yourself reading this article, chances are that you are looking for some ideas for photo projects. Naturally, it would be good to pick a photography project that helps you grow your photography skills. In this article, one such skill, negative space, will be discussed.

This is a compositional technique that can be used to produce eye-catching photos. When properly used, it can help improve your images. Therefore, let’s take a look at the technique?

Composition

There are three principal compositional components to a photography image.

Frame: The frame is the border that is all around the rest of the image.

Positive Space: The subject of the image. This is generally the item on which the camera is focused.

Negative Space The rest of the image. It is located between the positive space and the frame.

When many people go about composing an image, they concentrate their attention on the positive space. The negative space, gets very little thought. If it receives any consideration at all, it is more of an afterthought. This kind of approach can result in second-rate images. When correctly utilized, the negative space can serve two very important functions:

First: It can help in defining what the positive space is all about. Basically, it helps to tell the story of the positive space.

Second: It can improve the positive space. Essentially, the negative space helps to make the positive space more noticeable.

The negative space can serve to help define the positive space by furnishing additional detail. As one example, a photograph may show part of a bridge. However, there may be few details that offer any suggestions of where the bridge is based. Is it in a crowded, urban park or in a forest? We can not tell from the close-up. If the photographer were to show some of the landscape, this would create some negative space that would certainly help to much better define the positive space. As a result, the image would be improved.

While utilizing a negative space can really strengthen an image, there is one thing that must be avoided. The negative space should never be allowed to overwhelm the positive space as this would serve to deteriorate the image.

Making the positive space stick out is the other way that the negative space helps to enhance images. This is accomplished due to the fact the negative space helps to control the attention of a viewer. It does this by helping to lead the viewer’s attention to the positive space. When utilized in this fashion, the negative space is often relatively devoid of detail (this gets rid of any unproductive detail).

In short, both spaces need to be taken into consideration when figuring out how to best compose an image. Basically, both spaces are of equal importance and should be treated as such. This will help improve the quality of the images that you capture.

Your Photography Project

So, are you geared up to start a photography project? For this project, you should concentrate on capturing images where both spaces have been very carefully thought out. The goal is to carefully think about both spaces before the image is captured. This will require that you previsualize the image. That is, you must imagine what the image will look like before you capture the shot.

For this project, try capturing images of various types of subject matter. For instance, you could take shots in your garden, the city, a local park, and a national park.

Synopsis

This writing discussed one skill that can be used to launch a photography project. However, there are many more ideas that can help you improve your photography. Are you ready to check out some more photography ideas?

If you are looking for ways to improve your photography, why not start by upgrading your “hardware”?

Just dropping in to your local Best Buy or Target and picking up the cheapest camera on display will not get you where you want to be with respect to a higher level of photography. Take some time to find out which cameras are the best for your buck.

One such camera on the market right now is the Canon Powershot S90.

While digital SLR cameras are receiving plenty of interest because of their recent drop in prices and increased feature packages, there is still a demand for high end “point and shoot” cameras.

Say hello to the Canon Powershot S90, a completely point and shoot camera with virtually all the control of a digital slr camera. It is an alternative to several prosumer models that have a tendency to look more like professional models in line and design. This exceptional camera was created to be the total pocket or purse model.

The Canon Powershot S90 delivers the goods in low light settings!

This little gem has some serious benefits for two groups of people.

To begin with, there is the advancing enthusiastic amateur who is nearly ready for the Digital SLR. She wishes to experience camera features that are not available on less highly developed models in order to produce an understanding of what these controls are able to do and the way the work.

Next is the digital slr owner, either an advanced amateur or a professional, who is looking for a fantastic pocket model. These are individuals who never want to neglect a photographic experience of any kind, no matter if their digital slr camera is not conveniently available.

The Canon Powershot S90 has the look and feel of a truly compact camera, the kind that most folks carry around in their pocket or purse. And, although it looks like a typical digital compact, it is anything but.
Let’s have a look at the standard features of the Canon Powershot S90:

*	New 10-megapixel High Sensitivity System; DIGIC 4 Image Processor

*	Improved low-light image performance, plus a Low Light scene mode for ISO settings up to 12,800

*	Customizable control ring for easy access and operation of manual or other creative shooting settings

*	Wide-angle 3.8x optical zoom with Canon’s Optical Image Stabilizer; bright f/2.0 lens

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Here is the ‚”goods” that really sets this little camera apart from the other compacts.

1.	Extensive photographic feature set – more professional than typical point and shoot cameras

2.	New Function Ring for easy access of the advanced manual controls

3.	Usable, fast RAW mode with excellent software supplied (RAW, an alternative to JPEG, is the choice of all advanced photographers)

4.	Highly customizable – normal digital cameras have single creative selections, but the S90 is customizable in the same sense as high end DSLR cameras.

Need more to convince you? Here is a typical quote from one of the many satisfied Canon Powershot S90 owners: “You get what you pay for and if you want the best pocket size camera on the market, look no further than the S90.”

The Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD is available now at Amazon – great camera for taking great photos.

Photography Filters have two different meanings depending on how long you have had photography as a hobby. Most of us today think as filters as an option with Photoshop. This is not the case. Before the invention of computers and things like Photoshop we had small glass discs to create the filtered affect. There are many options with filters you can blur a picture, sharpen the picture, and even block out the UV rays. Filters are often used to correct a problem or make a picture look a little different – by bali photographer.

Lets talk about filters that blur a photograph. When you are taking a picture of a waterfall at the bottom where the water rises in a fogginess you can add a filter to create the cloud in the picture. Cameras donít always see what the eye sees. In some cases it can have a high resolution to depict the actual water drops rather than the cloud, so adding a filter to your lens can help create the effect your eye sees.

Other filters such as the UV protector guard against the harsh rays. Along with the UV filter you should have a polarizer. The polarizer is used in photography when you are taking a shot into direct sunlight or other light. It will help balance out the photograph so that you donít get the washed out look. Other filters can give you the washed out effect if you feel your photography would speak more. The filters in Photoshop are not as wide as the filters you can actually buy for your camera, but they can have some of the same effects that you are afterwards.

Have you ever wanted to create a star effect when taking pictures of light filtering through the trees? You can create a star effect with any photograph by using a star effect filter. This filter allows light to pass through a series of thin lines etched into the filter letting the light streak outward in a star shape.

Some filters actually help you create a depth of field or focal point. The fog/ mist filter is one of these. The fog/ mist filter allows for a glow or flare of light in the photograph. Photography is filled with much skill and equipment. Having filters to help create the perfect professional photograph will enhance your fun with your hobby. Lets look at a few more filters.

There are color correcting lenses. If the sky is too blue for the photograph you can choose a filter that will tamp down the blue to a less bright state. If you are into underwater photography you might have filters that allow for the underwater colors. The color spectrum does not have a great range under water. A lot of things will look red even though they are not. It is easy to bring about the original color of underwater life when you use special filters for color correction.

The use of filters in photography not only allows you to have special effects in a photograph to create something new and different, but it can help enhance the shot by adding color or dampening the natural effects of light. Photography has many types of equipment that require skill and knowledge making it a wonderful hobby or profession. If you need a hobby, photography allows you to be creative.

The diversity of careers in photography is truly amazing. From the base talent in photography and a solid understanding of new and emerging technologies, the sky is the limit for a talented photographer with a solid education under his or her belt. That is because photography is both an art form and a solid technical skill. So the same school might produce an award-winning artist, a successful wedding photographer, a fashion bali photographer, a police investigator taking pictures of crime scenes, or a crack newspaper photographer.

So the question emerges as to what kind of photography school to pick for yourself or the student in your family that wants the best education possible. How you pick any school is very much influenced by both how you approach education in general and what your objectives are.

Some would advocate that you look to get into the finest artistic photography schools in the country. If you wish to go down that path, then for sure the Brooks Institute of photography or one of the elite east coast schools of artistic photography is a noble ambition. But there are three drawbacks to trying to attend such schools. First is, of course, the potential cost. Any elite school is going to charge elite prices. And if you are like most of us, you want to get the most education for your money. So doing some caparison shopping for a school is in order.

The second drawback is getting admitted. Most of the top-flight schools have waiting lists and tough entry requirements that may make that ambition more demanding than is necessary. But the most meaningful drawback is that these schools may not be the right choice for the career you or the photography student in your life may wish to pursue. So a good general set of guidelines on how to evaluate a wide variety of photography schools is in order. The guidelines might includeÖ

What kind of photography is right for the student?
A program geared toward artistic photography that will result in pieces hanging in a modern art museum will have a very different approach than a program to train forensic photographers. Your student may not know right away what field they want to go into. If so, getting started at a generic school such as a photography emphasis at the local junior college may be the right choice until the career path becomes clearer.

Is it a legitimate school?
You want to avoid schools that are run from the internet or that you read about on the back of a matchbook. A legitimate school will produce a recognized degree that will be well respected in the industry and will help the student get jobs.

What is available locally?
Why go out of town or out of state if you have good local schools? Many state universities, junior colleges and local tech schools have find programs.

How diverse and up to date is the program?
Will your student get exposed to the newest of technology in the field of photography? Will they get trained in how to service many different types of photography assignments?

How does the programís job placement rating look?
What percentage of graduates from this program get jobs? How well respected is this school by businesses who employ photographers?

These are solid evaluation criteria. And if you apply these standards to a couple dozen of the finest schools both locally and nationally, before long a short list of good schools will emerge. From there, some site visits and interviews with teachers and graduates will narrow things down. And you will be glad you ìdid your homeworkî to find the kind of photography school that will take you or the student in your life to the next level of success in their love of photography.
